NAS KEFLAVIK, Iceland — Many people think dining at a 5-star restaurant is only for the rich and famous or an experience best reserved for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries.

But residents of NAS Keflavik have that opportunity every day.

The Two-Seasons Galley recently earned a 5-star accreditation from Naval Supply Systems Command. The accreditation means the galley has excelled in all aspects of food service from management and administration to service and sanitation.

The galley was awarded 800 points out of a possible 820, according to a new release.

“They evaluated everything from the cleanliness of our facility to the nutritional value offered by our menu,” said Gunnar Sveinsson, food service director.

The menu features both local dishes and Navy-wide recipes that are all checked for nutritional value.

“Everything we serve here, whether it is a local recipe for lamb or a Navy-wide recipe, has to be approved by a nutritionist,” said Sveinsson, a 16-year veteran of food service management. “Whenever we plan a meal, we are always looking at offering a good nutritional balance.”

He said the accreditation should be a morale boost to the 92 people assigned to the food service division of the supply department.

Sveinsson said the community played a part in the honor because customers always make suggestions and comments that help the galley make continual improvements.
