NAPLES, Italy — Sara McDonald, a Naples High School eighth-grader, cleaned up locally in the annual Parent Teacher Student Association national Reflections Competition at the high school level, taking first in the four categories of art, photography, music and literature — for the second year in a row.
For this year’s Reflections theme, “A Different Kind of Hero,” Sara chose to write for the literature portion about her elderly and diabetic grandfather, who takes care of his ailing wife as well as himself.
For photography, she photographed a working police dog next to its handler.
For the art category, she submitted a drawing of her grandparents, and for music, a composition written for the French horn and piano, both of which she plays.
Talent must run in the family, as her younger siblings won first-place recognitions in the elementary-aged competition. Annie McDonald, 10, won for music and art, and Jack McDonald, 5, won for photography and literature, mother Beth McDonald said.
The winning submissions now will compete against winners throughout Europe.
