NAPLES, Italy — A U.S. sailor died Friday in a motorcycle accident near the naval installation here, according to base officials.

The sailor, whose name was not released pending notification of family, was assigned to the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples, according to Lt. Cmdr. Robert Johnson, spokesman for Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia.

Johnson said the accident occurred around 11 a.m. Friday near Lago Patria, a northern suburb of Naples and home to NATO’s Joint Forces Command Naples.

The sailor is the third killed this year in a fatal accident in the Naples area.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Philip A. Bordeaux, 22, died Aug. 3 after an early-morning car accident near the base support site in Gricignano di Aversa. Petty Officer 3rd Class Dawn E. Holt, 36, died in January in an early-morning head-on collision while driving on a rain-flooded road toward work at the main base in Capodichino.news@stripes.com
