NAPLES, Italy — Cmdr. David Sutton, base supply officer at Naval Support Activity, Naples, has received the Bronze Star Medal for service as the chief of Iraq’s Baghdad Contracting Office from November 2003 to April 2004.
Under Sutton’s command in Iraq, the contracting office awarded and administered more than 1,100 contract actions totaling more than $100 million, according to the base public affairs office.
“Cmdr. Sutton excelled under pressure in an already hostile environment,” the office said, quoting from the citation that accompanied the medal. “When his office was struck by a rocket, he immediately took command of the situation, searched the damaged building for casualties and had them escorted to medical care.”
The Bronze Star, given for heroic or meritorious achievement or service, was awarded during a ceremony Monday in Naples.
