Naples delivers new post office

NAPLES, Italy — The final days of the pre-Christmas mailing rush are getting easier this week for those sending gifts from the Naval Support Activity Naples Capodichino base as officials open a larger post office.
The new facility, across the hall from the old Admin II building post office, will officially open for business Thursday. Limited services have been offered since Tuesday.
“This is a much larger space,” said Chief Petty Officer Jerry Finley, financial chief in charge of NSA Naples’ three post offices. “When we got mail for mail call, the [old] space was just packed.”
He said that between 1,000 and 1,500 customers use the Capodichino post office each week.
The new post office has three customer windows, each with a credit card machine, compared with two windows and one shared credit card machine in the old office.
“We had a lot of customers ask for this,” Finley said about the extra window. “Now they’re glad. It’s at the perfect time.”
Thursday is the holiday mailing deadline for first-class and priority mail to the United States.
Finley said the postal staff will also now have the ability to handle all registered, certified and insured mail. Previously, this mail had to be picked up at the base fleet mail facility about a mile away.
“We didn’t have the facility to accommodate this,” Finley said. “Now we do.”
“I think it’s slick,” said the new post office’s first customer, Lt. Cmdr. Bruce Roll. “That old office was cramped. It was inadequate for the quantity of mail they were forced to deal with on a daily basis.”
Roll was in the post office for an appointment to mail four boxes to the States.
“Year-round we have this service for all customers,” Finley said.
“If they have three or more boxes, they can call any post office and make an appointment.”
The new Capodichino post office will be open weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Naval Support Activity Naples’ three post offices offer appointments for customers needing to mail three or more boxes at one time.
Boxes must be ready to mail, complete with customs forms, at the time of the appointment.
Appointments can be scheduled for weekdays between 9 a.m. and 9:50 a.m.
The following are the normal hours and phone numbers for the three post offices:
CAPODICHINO: 081-568-4423 or DSN 626-4423; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday
