NAPLES, Italy — It’s nearing time to start growing a mustache – or perhaps don a fake one.
Residents stationed in Naples are joining the worldwide “Movember” movement, which includes a five-kilometer run Nov. 10 starting at noon at the U.S. Navy support site base near Gricignano, and aims to raise money and awareness of health issues affecting men.
Participants can register for the run online at http://us.movember.com/team/421973, or the day of the race in front of the support site gym. There is no age limit.
Participants, whom organizers call “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas,” can register either as individuals or as team members. Beginning Nov. 1, “Mo Bros,” who must be clean-shaven, have 30 days to “grow a Mo” to raise money and awareness for issues such as prostate cancer, skin cancer, bowel cancer, weight and blood pressure problems, anxiety and depression.
Funds collected benefit the Movember Foundation, LIVESTRONG and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Naples organizer Petty Officer 1st Class Scott Wulwick said.
Cash donations can be given to local representatives organizing the event or through the local organization’s website.
Last year, the Movember movement raised $126.3 million globally, according to the official website.
