NAHA, Okinawa — A molestation charge against an American insurance salesman on Okinawa has been withdrawn, an Okinawa prosecutor said Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Naha District Prosecutor’s Office said John Dennis McMenamy, 50, has been released from custody with no charges pending against him.

“The case was dropped,” the spokesman said. He gave no reason for withdrawing the charge and said it was not “releasable information.”

McMenamy, of the Koja district of Okinawa City, was arrested Aug. 8 for allegedly touching one of four middle-school girls in Manta Park in the Kaiho District of Okinawa City. He was apprehended in the park after the four girls ran to a nearby police station and reported the alleged incident.
