Mistake leads to temporary post closing
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — A German man mistook a gate guard’s instructions Tuesday morning and drove his car onto Kleber Casern in Kaiserslautern without proper authorization, officials said.
The post was briefly closed while authorities located the man, and access was restored by 10 a.m.
Apparently, the guard had instructed the man to wait for the person who was to sign him in, but the driver thought he had been cleared to enter after his car and passport were checked.
The driver, who was not identified, continued on to an appointment with a finance officer unaware of the commotion he caused at the gate, said Jim Otto, an anti-terrorism specialist with U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern.
"He was more embarrassed than anything else," Otto said.
Otto said the man became confused when he was told to pull over to the side to allow a few trucks to pass. As a precaution, anti-terrorism devices at the gate were activated and access to the post was closed.
