MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — Misawa residents shouldn’t be concerned about loud explosions or troops running around the base in chemical protection suits this weekend, military officials said Friday.

The combat action – all simulated – is part of Keen Sword 2011. The exercise began Friday and will run through Dec. 10.

At Misawa, Japan Ground Self-Defense and U.S. troops will focus on the “guard and protect” mission of securing the facility.

Public service announcements broadcast on the American Forces Network radio station Friday also warned of potential gate closures over the weekend, and urged base residents to be patient.
