MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — Military spouses who feel as if they’re always the last to know soon will have another way to stay informed.

The Family Support Center is spearheading “Spouse Connection,” a monthly e-mail newsletter detailing important Misawa events as well as educational tidbits about the base, Misawa area, Japanese culture and local attractions. Smaller event updates will be sent weekly.

The idea for the initiative came from a recent meeting between Family Support Center staff and military spouse liaisons, who told the staff that “information goes out on the military side but doesn’t always make it home,” said Maj. Victor Baumgarten, the center’s director. “We were looking for a way to have a direct connection to the spouses at home.”

After spouses sign up for the free service, the newsletter will be sent to their home e-mail addresses. It will contain items such as calendar events from the Family Support Center and listings from base agencies such as Life Skills, American Red Cross, 35th Medical Group and the Health and Wellness Center. It won’t include events sponsored by 35th Services Squadron, since those are posted monthly in the publication Leisure Times, Baumgarten noted.

“We don’t want to duplicate what Services is doing,” he said.

Baumgarten said the newsletter will be mostly in text format to keep its size small. The Family Support Center is seeking a few volunteers to compile the newsletters, the first of which will be e-mailed in July. Though military spouses are the target audience, anyone can sign up. About 150 people have subscribed so far, Baumgarten noted. To sign up, send an e-mail with “Subscribe” in the subject line to 35mss.fsc@misawa.af.mil. Call DSN 226-4735 for more information.
