Misawa schools collect items for hurricane relief
January 6, 2006
MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — It started with a small pile of school supplies in early October and has since grown to 29 boxes and counting.
Edgren High School’s seniors are still collecting donations for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, said English teacher Laurie Kuntz, the senior class sponsor.
The effort has grown to include all three Department of Defense Dependents Schools at Misawa, she said. Sollars Elementary School donated school books, and Cummings Elementary School recently held a shoe drive, giving 11 boxes of used shoes to Kuntz to send to Louisiana.
Since late September, Kuntz and the Edgren seniors have worked with two Louisiana educators to collect school materials for students displaced by the hurricanes. They recently asked the group to send shoes, Kuntz said, noting that she’s waiting for funding to ship the rest of the shoes to the States.
Though it’s been more than four months since the hurricane swept across Louisiana, Kuntz said the Edgren seniors will continue to collect school supplies and whatever else students there need.
“They claim they still need a lot of stuff,” she said. “It will be ongoing.”
They’ve received e-mails and handwritten letters from teachers and students expressing thanks, she said. One note that stands out read: “Dear Friends. Thank you very much for the supplies, books, games, toys, videos and book bags. We lost a lot to Hurricane Katrina but we are happy we have friends like you.”
It was signed simply, “Treall,” an elementary school student from Belle Chasse, La.
“We know the boxes are reaching them. We know they’re being distributed,” Kuntz said. “It’s been a great thing.”
Donated materials may be dropped off in Room No. 4 at Edgren High School from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. Call DSN 226-4377 or e-mail Kuntz at email@example.com for more information.
