MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — A noncommissioned officer assigned to this northern Japan base died Saturday at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, after recently returning to the States on medical evacuation orders, base officials said Monday.

Staff Sgt. Dustin Williams, 24, was a postal supervisor with the 35th Communications Squadron. The cause of his death is under investigation. Base officials, in a statement released Monday, said they were respecting the privacy rights of the family in releasing few details.

“It is a tragedy anytime we lose one of our airmen,” said Brig. Gen. Sam Angelella, 35th Fighter Wing commander, according to a statement.

Base officials said Williams flew from Japan to Texas on a commercial airline, but they did not disclose his medical condition at the time he left Misawa or the date of his departure.

Williams was assigned to Misawa in May 2004. He entered the Air Force in January 2001, serving previously at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., as an aircrew life support apprentice.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Misawa’s base chapel.
