MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — The Robert D. Edgren High School cheerleading squad recently took home the Department of Defense Dependents Schools Far East Cheer Team Championship in the Class A small schools division.

It was the team’s first Far East trophy in more than a decade.

“Although our team is small in number, we are big in heart,” said Coach Pamela Tucker, who also credited the athletes’ success to her assistant, Amber Altizer.

Five of nine Eagles on the squad earned all-star honors: freshman Brianne Soeder and juniors Heather Eiler, Janine Russ, Erika Williamson and Alyssa Rodriquez.

Rodriquez also earned a spot on the National Cheerleading Association All-Star Squad, which will perform at halftime at the Orange Bowl in Miami on Jan. 3.

The Far East cheerleading championship was held earlier this month at Seoul American High School in South Korea. Edgren competed against six teams in the Class A division.

The Red Devils from Nile C. Kinnick High School on Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, took top honors in the Class AA large schools division.
