WASHINGTON — Lincoln Education Services have expanded its offer of more than $500,000 in military scholarships to include servicemembers’ dependents as well.

Previously the education grants were open only to military, veterans or their spouses. But officials from the group this week opened up applications to children and other dependents of active-duty troops, reservists and veterans.

The scholarships are part of the Armed Forces Support Foundation’s Hire a Hero program.

Eight scholarships will be made available to overseas applicants to take online courses in the company’s criminal justice or allied health degree programs, according to Lincoln officials.

In addition, 54 partial grants, some up to $10,000, will be given to U.S. applicants for degree programs in automotive technology, health sciences, skilled trades, business, information technology or hospitality at local Lincoln campuses.

Sixty more scholarships of $2,000 each will be given to applicants for study in those same academic fields.

To apply, applicants must file an online essay or video explaining what serving the country means to them, and what they hope to accomplish with the scholarship. Recipients will also be required to pass a qualification entrance exam before beginning any degree program.
