More than $700,000 in scholarships were awarded to 475 college-bound students through this year’s Scholarships for Military Children program, designed to help military families with higher education tuition.

The program, a collaborative effort of the Defense Commissary Agency and the Fisher House Foundation, has awarded more than $3.2 million in scholarships over the past four years.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student has to maintain a 3.0 grade point average, participate in after-school or community activities and write an essay on how terrorism has affected their lives.

Program officials said the cumulative GPA of this year’s recipients was above 3.7.
