Military bases in South Korea list April events
SEOUL — U.S. military officials have planned dozens of events across South Korea to combat sexual assault, child abuse and alcohol abuse.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Month of the Military Child, Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Alcohol Awareness Month. The following activities are being offered:
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Area I (Camps Casey and Red Cloud)April 7: A rally will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Camp Casey main gate. The program will include food, entertainment, an anti-sexual assault proclamation and a tribute to silent victims, sponsored by the 210th Fires Brigade and Area I.April 16: A candlelight vigil will be held at the 2nd Infantry Division Chapel from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Camp Red Cloud.April 18: A Camp Red Cloud prayer lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mitchell’s.April 21: A 5K walk/run will be sponsored by United Service Organizations from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Camp Casey. Prizes, raffles and refreshments will be available.April 27: Information will be distributed at each Area I camp’s main gates.
Area II (Yongsan Garrison and Hannam Village) For more information on the following events, call DSN 738-3034.April 9: A “Powder Puff” mentoring seminar begins at 3 p.m. at the Moyer Recreation Theater. The seminar will address ways to avoid becoming a victim of sexual assault. Seating is limited.April 11: “May I Kiss You? Do You Ask?” seminar on dating relationships, planned from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Community Service Building, Room 226.
Area III (Camp Humphreys) Sexual Assault Response Coordinators will staff information booths from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following locations:April 9: Providers Grill Dining FacilityApril 16: Red Dragon Dining FacilityApril 23: 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade Dining FacilityApril 30: Alaska Mining ClubApril 26: Deployable Sexual Assault Response Coordinators/Unit Victim Advocates recognition ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Community Activity Center. The event is free, open to the public and appetizers will be served.April 24: “May I Kiss You? Do You Ask?” seminar on dating relationships, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Army Community Service building.April 30: Rape Aggressive Defense Workshop hosted by the Army Criminal Investigative Division, Army Community Services and the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Zoeckler Station Gym. Comfortable clothing is encouraged as the exercises will be physical.
Area IV (Camp Walker) For more information call Carlos Algarin at DSN 768-8129 or 768-6115.April 7: At the post exchange, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., display of child abuse awareness pamphlets and booklets, along with a multicultural food sampling.April 26: A presentation of “Protecting Yourself — The Right to Say No,” from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at School Age Services.April 30: A “silent witness” display will be mounted on the grassy area between Camp Walker's Gate 4 bus stop and the post exchange taxi stand. Life-sized wooden silhouettes will represent sexual assault victims.April 30: A recognition dinner for sexual assault unit victim advocates, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Evergreen Club.
Osan Air BaseApril 24 to April 27: Briefings will be held at the base teen center. Time to be announced.
Kunsan Air BaseApril 7 and 14: Kunsan Air Base will have a sexual assault information table outside the base exchange from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Child Abuse Prevention Month & Month of the Military Child
Osan Air BaseApril 27: A “Blue Ribbons — Multimedia Extravaganza” with elementary school students to educate children on child abuse prevention month. Time and location to be announced.
Area II (Yongsan Garrison and Hannam Village)April 7: Family Services Division is holding a 5K Fun Run that begins at the Collier Field House. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the run begins at 9:30 a.m.April 11: A presentation called “Tricky People” uses song and dance to teach children how to recognize deceptive behavior, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Child and Youth Services, School Age Services.April 21: Community Fun Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Child Development Center parking lot.April 21: The “April Showers” community baby shower for expecting parents or anyone with infants under 2 months old, to be held at the Army Community Services building from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Will feature gifts, games, a presentation on shaken baby syndrome and other education information. Call 738-5151 to register.April 24: A Child Find developmental screening from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the Hannam Village Army Community Service building.April 25: PLAYWORKS playgroup from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. during WEEPLAY playgroup at Child and Youth Services, School Age Services.
Area IV (Camps Walker, George and Henry) For more information call Carlos Algarin at DSN 768-8129 or 768-6115.April 12: A “Drum March to Break the Silence and Cycle of Abuse,” from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Camp Walker.April 19: At Camp George’s child development center, an event titled “My Body Belongs To Me” is geared to preschoolers, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.April 20: Child fingerprinting is available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Taegu American School on Camp George.April 25: A presentation on “Internet Dangers” is set for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Army Community Service building on Camp Henry.April 28: A “Blue Ribbon Community Family Day,” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Kelly Field on Camp Walker.
Alcohol Awareness Month
Osan Air BaseApril 23 at the base exchange, a booth will be operated all day.
Kunsan Air BaseApril 6 — Visit a booth outside the base exchange from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to find alcohol questionnaires, pamphlets, giveaways and a “drunk goggles” demonstration.
