KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — A former Air Force officer of the year was kicked out of the service and sentenced to six months in jail for downloading child pornography onto his home computer.

Capt. Jason Fye, a resource adviser with the 352nd Operations Support Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, England, pleaded guilty at a general court-martial earlier this week, said Capt. Evelyn Camilli, the base’s assistant staff judge advocate.

A jury of seven officers sentenced Fye for possession of child pornography on Wednesday. Fye was the recipient of the Company Grade Officer of the Year award, which goes to the base’s top second lieutenant, first lieutenant or captain.

A Defense Department computer forensic expert found 30,000 images of children, from toddlers to 17-year-olds, in sexually explicit poses on one of two hard drives seized by law enforcement authorities. The majority of the girls and boys in the images were under 13, Camilli said. The jury saw two videos downloaded by Fye before sentencing him.

Air Force Office of Special Investigations agents began investigating Fye after his name turned up on an FBI child porn sting operation last year. He had used his credit card to access a child porn Web site on the Internet, Camilli said.

The names of at least three U.S. airmen stationed in England were among the dozens nabbed in the FBI operation. One airman has not been court-martialed.

In March, Tech Sgt. Dean Harmer, a maintainer with the 352nd Maintenance Squadron at Mildenhall, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and admitted to subscribing to six Web sites that provided the images.

He got a tougher sentence than Fye. A military judge sentenced Harmer to 11 months’ confinement, a bad-conduct discharge and reduction in rank.

Fye, who has 10 years of service in the Air Force, will serve his jail time at RAF Lakenheath in England, Camilli said.
