A 24-year-old sailor from Roswell, N.M., went overboard in the Arabian Sea on Thursday morning and has been declared dead, Pentagon officials said.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Menelek Brown was assigned to the USS Hopper, whose home port is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, officials said in a statement dated Monday.

Brown went missing about 7:30 a.m. local time Thursday while the ship was conducting maritime security operations, according to The Associated Press.

Brown was declared dead after air and surface forces conducted an extensive search for him.
