Mideast briefs: Postings to downrange commands announced

The Pentagon has announced a series of postings affecting commands downrange.
n Brig. Gen. John W. Nicholson Jr., currently the deputy director for operations, National Military Command Center in Washington, D.C., has been assigned deputy commander for Stabilization, Regional Command South, International Security Assistance Force, Afghanistan.
n Brig. Gen. Kurt J. Stein, the assistant chief of staff at U.N. Command/Combined Forces Command/U.S. Forces Korea and the deputy commander for support, Eighth U.S. Army, has been assigned deputy chief of staff, resources and sustainment, Multi-National Force — Iraq.
n Col. Bryan G. Watson, chief of staff for the 1st Armored Division/Multi-National Division — North, Iraq, has been assigned commandant, U.S. Army Engineer School/deputy commander of concepts, doctrine and organizations, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
30 insurgents reported killed in Afghan fightingKABUL, Afghanistan — The U.S.-led coalition said Thursday it had killed more than 30 insurgents in a battle in eastern Afghanistan, fighters an Afghan governor said were responsible for an attack that killed 10 French troops.
Officials also announced the deaths of six NATO soldiers in two attacks. Three Polish soldiers were killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded in Ghazni, Polish Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday. A fourth soldier was wounded in the blast.
In the southern Kandahar province, meanwhile, a roadside blast Wednesday killed three Canadian soldiers, Canada’s Department of National Defense said.
