A memorial ceremony has been scheduled for a Mannheim soldier who died in Afghanistan last week.

The ceremony for Staff Sgt. Brian E. Studer will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mannheim’s Benjamin Franklin Village Chapel.

Studer, 28, of Ramsey, Minn., died Friday in Ghazni of wounds suffered when the makeshift bomb he was attempting to deactivate detonated.

Navy: Joint exercise in Gulf to boost securityDUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The U.S. Navy says American, British and Bahraini ships are carrying out a five-day exercise to improve security in the Persian Gulf and better protect coalition ships against vessels "deemed threatening."

The Navy statement released Wednesday by the Bahrain headquarters of the 5th Fleet says the exercise is dubbed "Goalkeeper." It started Sunday and is led by Britain’s Royal Navy Commodore Peter Hudson.
