A service member with the international coalition fighting the Islamic State group has died in a noncombat incident in northern Iraq, the U.S.-led alliance said early Wednesday.
COVID-19 was not suspected as a cause in the service member’s death, which happened on Monday in Irbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region, Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve said in a statement.
The identity and nationality of the service member was being withheld, pending notification of next of kin, the statement said.
The cause of death was still under investigation, the statement said.
U.S. and other foreign troops are largely based at a compound at the northern Iraqi city’s international airport.
