BAUMHOLDER, Germany — A memorial for a Baumholder soldier who died last week will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the base’s main chapel.
Spc. Tony J. Gonzales, assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team’s 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, was killed by a roadside bomb Sunday in Baghdad’s Sadr City. He was 20.
Gonzales enlisted in the Army in 2006 after graduating from Freedom High School in Turlock, Calif., according to news reports. He planned to follow in his father’s footsteps, first into the military and then into a law enforcement career. He deployed to Iraq on April 6 as a tank driver, but spent most of his time in Iraq on foot patrol.
The memorial service will be held in Chapel One.
