A memorial service for Kubasaki High School teacher Christopher Sullivan is to begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Camp Foster Chapel.

The physical education teacher and basketball coach died unexpectedly April 8 while visiting the Philippines during spring break. An Angeles City, Philippines, police spokesman has stated that the 51-year-old coach died in his sleep from a heart attack.

Sullivan taught in the Department of Defense Dependents Schools system for 20 years, according to a letter the high school sent to Kubasaki parents. His DODDS credentials include teaching at Darmstadt Elementary School in Germany for seven years; Nile C. Kinnick High School in Yokosuka, Japan, for eight years; and Kubasaki for the past five years. He even graduated from a DODDS high school, in West Germany, in 1973.

“Mr. Sullivan was an excellent, caring teacher and dedicated coach,” the letter to parents stated. “He will be remembered for his devotion and commitment to Kubasaki High School’s Dragon family as well as the numerous lives he touched as an educator. His profound ability to coach young adults remains inspirational.”

Sullivan is survived by his wife, daughter, father, four brothers and one sister.
