MCCS Okinawa magazines earn honors in U.S. competition
CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — They’re on newsstands around the island for free every month, but one can sometimes find them on eBay for up to $20.
Such is the popularity of the Okinawa Living and Outdoors magazines — and American publishing competitions are starting to take notice.
The design, layout, photography and writing of the Marine Corps Community Services publications were recently recognized with 16 awards from two top competitions for marketing publications.
MCCS submissions went up against nearly 800 entries for magazines in the Annual Awards for Publication Excellence competition and came away with seven awards. In the Magnum Opus Awards, where MCCS won nine times, a feature article on the evolution of Nintendo garnered gold.
A small, constantly rotating staff within the marketing department of MCCS puts out the monthly magazine, of which 20,000 copies are distributed each month around the military bases.
