Rear Adm. Carl V. Mauney assumed command of the Naples, Italy-based Submarine Group Eight from Rear Adm. Paul. S. Stanley during a ceremony on the NATO base at Nisida Island near Naples.
Mauney last served as the director of the Strategy and Policy Division at the office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, D.C.
In addition to serving as head of the submarine group, Mauney will control Operations and Plans for the U.S. Naval Forces Europe and NATO’s Allied Submarines, Mediterranean.
Stanley will become director of Warfare Programs and Readiness for U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va. He had twice served as the submarine group’s commander, once for four months as interim commander in early 2002 and again in July 2003.
“Rear Admiral Stanley has been vital here,” guest speaker Vice Adm. Harry Ulrich, the 6th Fleet commander, was quoted as saying in a Navy news release.
“He has done a tremendous job of creating a vision of what the 6th Fleet and military in Naples and Europe can and should do.”
In addition to the Naples-based staff, Submarine Group Eight manages the La Maddalena, Sardinia-based Submarine Squadron 22 and submarine tender USS Emory S. Land.
