A patrol of Iraqi soldiers and U.S. Marines uncovered a series of weapons caches on the outskirts of Barwanah, recovering more than 100 artillery rounds and 4,000 pounds of explosives, among other weapons.

The first cache was discovered by the Marines’ translator; another 10 caches were found buried nearby after a search by the Iraqis and the Marines.

In all, 137 artillery rounds, 56 mortar rounds, 47 rockets, armor-piercing rounds and 1,900 pounds of explosive propellant was uncovered. All of the weapons and explosives were destroyed in place, officials said.

The Marines are assigned to 2nd Platoon, Company L, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment.
