Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff will be West Point commencement speaker

WEST POINT (Tribune News Service) — Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the 19th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be the commencement speaker for West Point's Class of 2018.

Graduation will be on May 26 in Michie Stadium.

As chairman, Dunford is the principal military advisor to President Donald Trump, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and the National Security Council. Mattis was West Point's commencement speaker last year.

Before becoming chairman, Dunford was the 36th commandant of the Marine Corps.

A native of Boston, Dunford has served as an infantry officer at all levels. He commanded a Marine battalion and regiment during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
