HEIDELBERG, Germany — A 33-year-old Army MP admitted raping and repeatedly molesting a young girl while also distributing nude pictures of her strapped to a bedpost over the Internet and making arrangements for others to molest the child.

Often breaking down in tears, Staff Sgt. Jason L. Lewis, assigned to the 95th Military Police Battalion in Mannheim, described before a military judge on Friday more than three years of sexual abuse against the girl.

The abuse, Lewis said during the trial, began in June 2000 and ended in September 2003 shortly before he was arrested.

Lewis told Army Judge (Col.) Stephen Henley that his victim “had reason to believe that if she tried to resist, I may have resorted to violence.”

Lewis said he also threatened the girl that if “anyone found out about this, I would go to jail.”

Lewis testified there were periods “when I went months at a time where I stopped forcing her to do the sodomy that I was doing to her.”

But the violence continued, he said, and as time went on he began arranging for others to join in molesting the girl.

After meeting via “Internet sites that cater to people who trade in child pornography,” Lewis said he arranged for Joseph Pirosko, an U.S. civilian in Germany, and Sgt. Jason K. Griner, 32, of the 66th Transportation Company, to sexually abuse the girl.

A German court convicted Pirosko in January of aggravated sexual abuse on a child.

Griner was charged in December with indecent acts and liberties with a child, posting pornography on the Internet, and using a personal computer to receive, store and distribute child pornography. His court-martial is scheduled for March 21.

Lewis is slated for sentencing Monday where he will face a maximum punishment of life in prison without the possibility of parole, as well as a reduction to E-1, a dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of all pay, said the chief prosecutor, Capt. Matthew Shepard, during the court proceedings.

Under a pretrial agreement arranged by Lewis’ defense team, Capts. Dolly Gray and Kobi Smith, Lewis has been promised a potentially lighter sentence because he is testifying against Griner.

Henley, who said he has not read the sentencing details of the plea bargain, will deliver his own sentence Monday. The Army judge also will hear any statement Lewis would like to make and testimony from anyone who would like to speak on his behalf before sentencing.

Henley said Lewis he would “get the benefit of whichever [sentence] is less.”

The plea bargain also includes dropping several allegations, including multiple attempted rapes against the child, solicitation, sodomy and child pornography charges, Henley added.

Lewis’ testimony on Friday — designed to prove he was, in fact, guilty of the charges he was confessing to — was repeatedly marked by Lewis wiping away tears.

During one break requested by his defense team so that he could compose himself, Lewis — dressed in his Class A uniform, complete with combat patch and a tall rack of awards and ribbons — broke down sobbing in his mother’s arms.

During the trial, Lewis also confessed that he exposed himself in digital pictures, wearing only the top of his dress uniform, and posting the photos on the Internet.

“Due to the fact that I was wearing my military uniform while exposing myself, it lowers the regard of the military in the public’s view,” Lewis said in court.
