RAF MILDENHALL, England — A man killed in a weekend car crash was in a vehicle registered to someone stationed at RAF Mildenhall, base and local officials said Tuesday.
The Honda Civic crashed into a tree around 2 a.m. Sunday, Cambridgeshire police said. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, police said.
The vehicle was registered to someone stationed at RAF Mildenhall, said Col. Kenneth T. Bibb Jr., 100th Air Refueling Wing commander.
“Authorities say that it could take up to a week to confirm the person’s identity due to the extensive injuries as a result of the crash,” Bibb said in a Facebook post on the RAF Mildenhall page Tuesday. “Even though we cannot confirm the individual’s identity, we are greatly saddened by this loss.”
The family of the vehicle’s owner has been notified, according to a Facebook comment from base officials.
Cambridgeshire police reported the accident occurred at the intersection of highways A1304 and A11 northbound, near Newmarket.
