Man arrested after USS Shiloh sailor is hit over the head with beer bottle
YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — An American was arrested Saturday and accused of hitting a USS Shiloh sailor over the head with a beer bottle in Yokosuka’s bar district, a Kanagawa Prefectural Police spokesman said Tuesday.
Police said Joel Mark Jeffrey, 20, is accused of assaulting Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Wilson, 33, in the Yokosuka Honch bar district after Wilson reportedly said Jeffrey’s wife was “hot.”
Wilson suffered a head injury, which should take several weeks to heal, police said. He was taken to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Yokosuka, for treatment.
Yokosuka’s military police reported the incident to Yokosuka police, which arrested Jeffrey around 1 a.m., police said. He remained in custody Tuesday after the case was transferred to the Yokohama District Public Prosecutor’s Office Sunday.
Jeffrey, who is unemployed, is a former Yokosuka serviceman who left military service this year, police said, adding that he now lives with his Japanese wife in Yokosuka city.
