Lodging at Naval Station Rota, Spain, and Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, were among winners of a prestigious Navy award that puts the service’s hotels in the equivalent of a five-star hotel category in Europe.
The Navy bases were the only two overseas locations awarded the 2007 Adm. Elmo Zumwalt Award in the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites competition, according to a Navy news release.
Similar to commercial hotel quality rankings, Navy lodgings are awarded three-, four- or five-star ratings. Five-star ratings get the Zumwalt award.
The award is named for the former chief of naval operations who spearheaded changes in bachelor housing and visitor quarters.
Other winners were Naval Air Facility El Centro, Calif.; Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif.; Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Calif.; Naval Base Point Loma, Calif.; Naval Support Detachment Monterey, Calif.; Joint Forces Staff College, Va.; Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine; Naval Shipyard Portsmouth, N.H.; and Naval Station Newport, R.I.
