SEOUL — Lightning struck and killed a U.S. soldier participating in a field training exercise at Gwangju Air Base on Saturday, 8th Army officials said Monday.

Attempts to resuscitate Pfc. Jesus A. Najera of Buckeye, Ariz., were unsuccessful, according to an 8th Army news release. Three other soldiers were injured in the incident. Two were treated and returned to duty but the third remained in stable condition in the 121st General Hospital’s multicare unit Monday.

Najera, 19, was a Patriot crewmember with Alpha Battery, 2nd Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade.

Officials were to conduct a memorial service Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Gwangju’s Post Chapel.

“The entire chain of command expresses their sincere and deepest condolences to the friends and family of Pfc. Najera,” according to the release.

Army officials are conducting a safety investigation.
