I just wanted to give a little feedback on “Wanting inside; Changes make it harder to get a home on base” (article, April 2, Stripes UK), about housing in the U.K.

I’m stationed at Lakenheath, and I have no problems at all living off base. I live off base and have since 2003. Not once have I been burglarized, and I have no military people living around me.

It all comes down to common sense. If you have nice things and you are showing them off, then chances are someone will steal them.

Or, if you don’t do your homework and move to Thetford or Brandon — areas with high numbers of thefts — then that’s just poor planning.

As for bills, people get expenses paid through the cost-of-living allowance and utility allowance, so there’s no excuse for that either. That’s just poor budgeting.
