MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan — The Leatherneck Depot, a new store operating in the converted former General Services Administration Mart, opened Monday afternoon.

The store carries office supplies, computer accessories, tools, cleaning supplies, bulk items, food-service items and some military supplies, said Ashleigh Pipes, Iwakuni Marine Corps Community Services spokeswoman.

Matthew Niedzwiecki, retail manager of the Iwakuni Marine Corps Exchange, said Leatherneck Depot prices are lower than GSA Mart prices “by as much as 20 percent.”

Any customer authorized to make purchases in the exchange can shop at The Leatherneck Depot, he said. The GSA Mart was restricted to official government purchasers.

“All the Iwakuni Marines and their families now have a much larger assortment of merchandise they can buy on base,” Pipes said Monday.

“The community will benefit because all of the revenue will stay in Iwakuni and be used for quality-of-life programs,” she said.

The Leatherneck Depot is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday.
