Lakenheath identifies airman killed in motorcycle crash
RAF MILDENHALL, England – The servicemember killed in a motorcycle crash Friday near RAF Lakenheath has been identified as Airman 1st Class Darren Phillips.
The motorcycle driven by Phillips, 20, collided with a Skoda near the A11 Five Ways Roundabout, a large traffic intersection near the base, the Suffolk Constabulary said. Phillips died at a hospital in Cambridge later Friday.
Phillips, who arrived at Lakenheath in July 2014, served as a crew chief in the 48th Equipment Maintenance Squadron.
“This loss has been felt across our wing,” said Col. Robert Novotny, 48th Fighter Wing commander, in a statement. “Right now, we’re focused on supporting Darren’s family, as well as the Airmen he worked and lived alongside here at Lakenheath.”
Constabulary officers are asking for any witnesses to contact them.
