An RAF Lakenheath-based airman died on Friday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near the base, Air Force officials said.

The accident occurred Friday afternoon on the A1101 highway in Barton Mills, England, according to a base news release. The airman, who was not identified, was attached to the 48th Equipment Maintenance Squadron, the release said.

The airman was treated at the scene, then airlifted for emergency medical treatment. He died in the evening of his inuries, the release said.

“It’s a sad day for the Liberty Wing, especially for those who knew this airman, and for his brothers and sisters in the 48th EMS,” Col. Robert Novotny, 48th Fighter Wing commander, was quoted as saying.
