RAF MILDENHALL, England — An RAF Lakenheath airman charged with two counts of rape is not being held in pretrial confinement pending his Nov. 27 court-martial.

Airman Renato Sanchez Del Carpio, of the 48th Dental Squadron, is charged with the rape of an airman basic at or near Lakenheath’s building 920, a dormitory, on Oct. 28, 2005.

He also faces a rape charge involving an airman at or near the base’s library on Oct. 4, 2006.

The trial began Aug. 29, but was delayed after a judge’s “ruling on a motion” during a closed-door session, base officials said at the time.

Citing medical privacy issues, base representatives would not say what the motion entailed.

Despite repeated requests, Stars and Stripes was not informed of Del Carpio’s Article 32 hearing, the equivalent of a grand jury proceeding. Article 32 hearings are open to the public.
