RAF MILDENHALL, England — An England-based U.S. airman will face a court-martial next week in connection with two separate rape charges that took place a year apart.

Airman Renato Sanchez Del Carpio, stationed at RAF Lakenheath, is being charged in the rape of an airman basic on Oct. 28, 2005, and the rape of an airman on Oct. 4, 2006, according to base representatives.

The rape in 2006 took place at or near building 907, the base’s library, while the 2005 incident happened at or near building 920, a dormitory.

Del Carpio is a medical professional with the 48th Dental Squadron, according to Capt. Tisha Wright, a Lakenheath spokeswoman.

The court-martial is scheduled to begin Aug. 29.

An Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of grand-jury proceedings where a judge decides if there is enough evidence to warrant prosecution, was held May 10, according to Wright.

Although notification of such proceedings has been requested in the past, Stripes was not informed of Del Carpio’s hearing.

Article 32 hearings by law are open to the public, although some portions can be closed under some circumstances.

Public affairs officials would not elaborate on the details surrounding the charges against Del Carpio.

“Providing information outside of the specification of charges has the potential to taint the jury and would be inappropriate to release at this time,” Wright said in an e-mail late Friday.
