Ships from the USS Kitty Hawk Carrier Strike Group pulled into port at Sasebo Naval Base, Japan, on Monday as part of the group’s fall deployment.

The three ships at port in Sasebo are the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh and the guided missile destroyer USS Stethem, bringing with them about 6,000 sailors, including members of Naval Air Facility Atsugi-based Carrier Air Wing 5.

Several sailors from the strike group planned to volunteer for community projects while in Sasebo, according to a Kitty Hawk news release. Others were to participate in sporting activities with local teams.

The strike group’s ships operate out of Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan. The group is expected to return home by the end of the year, according to Navy sources.
