Kaiserslautern, SHAPE sweep Europe JROTC drill championships
March 6, 2016
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — More than 100 cadets from 11 JROTC drill teams participated in the annual Department of Defense Education Activity Europe drill team championship on Saturday.
Air Force and Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps drill teams from Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain and Germany competed in color guard, regulation drill and inspection events at Kaiserslautern High School. The cadets also took part in saber and rifle exhibitions for solo performers, duos and drill teams.
The day’s activities culminated in a final inspection that pitted teams, comrades and schools against each other in the winner-takes-all competition, known as the individual drill routine. An Air Force Master Sergeant called out commands and any mistake led to elimination. When the dust settled, only Aviano’s Mia Fosco was left.
Although Aviano secured a big win for the final inspection, SHAPE came out on top by winning the overall championship as well as the color guard, regulation, inspection and judge’s trophy.
Cadets from Aviano, Naples, Alconbury, SHAPE, AFNORTH, Sigonella, Ramstein, Lakenheath, Bitburg, Rota and Kaiserslautern all participated in this year’s drill competition.
