KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — The office set up to help units on Kadena follow through on the Air Force’s Smart Operations 21 program is up and running.

The program is an Air Force effort launched last year to boost value and efficiency. Kadena’s office is set up to be a “one-stop shop” to help meet those goals, said Capt. John McDevitt, who is in charge of the office.

Senior Master Sgt. Kenny Trawick, an AFSO 21 process manager, said he and McDevitt help units identify and eliminate ways of doing things that aren’t productive or cost effective.

They have already seen results since starting up last month.

The 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron, for example, recently moved about 7,000 mobility bags issued to airmen for deployments to a central location to better replenish the bags and restock expired items, McDevitt said. Before the change, airmen were responsible for restocking their own bags.

The move will save the unit about 10,000 man-hours a year, McDevitt said.

No idea is too big or too small if it “saves time, saves money or reduces waste,” McDevitt said.

Airmen can make suggestions by calling the AFSO 21 office at DSN 632-8481 or 632-8408, or e-mailing 18wg.afso21@kadena.
