A Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Okinawa teacher died in her home Friday, officials said Tuesday.

Georgiana “Pinkey” Ferry, 59, from Huron, S.D., was a fourth-grade teacher at Kadena Elementary School, DODDS spokeswoman Laura Stoller said.

Ferry began her DODDS teaching career at Kadena Elementary School in 1987 and then moved to Byrd Elementary School in Yokohama, Japan. She returned to Kadena Elementary in the 2006 school year. Colleagues at Kadena Elementary said they would miss Ferry’s sense of humor and all-around good-natured spirit.

“Mrs. Ferry was an outstanding educator and a well-respected member of our staff,” said Stan Hays, the elementary school’s principal. “She will certainly be missed by students, parents and teachers alike. We were lucky to have had her here with us while we did.”

Ferry is survived by her husband, Charles Ferry, and sons David and Brian. Funeral and memorial arrangements were not immediately known.
