OKINAWA CITY, Okinawa — Okinawa police say they took a Kadena Air Base airman into custody Sunday for allegedly assaulting a cab driver and failing to pay his fare.
Airman 1st Class Jon C. Spells, 22, of 18th Operations Support Squadron, was arrested at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday, after police received a report from a cab driver who complained that Spells took a cab from Kadena to the club district and got out of the taxi without paying the 690 yen (about $6.50) fare, police said. The driver told police Spells wanted to get change for a 5,000 yen bill (about $47.60) at a nearby drugstore, but became argumentative when the driver insisted on following him into the store.
Spells allegedly punched the driver in the face and head, and walked toward Highway 330, according to the police report. The driver was not seriously injured, police said.
When arrested a few minutes later, Spells appeared to be drunk, police said. He allegedly admitted to skipping out on the fare, but denied the assault.
Spells was in Okinawa City police custody Monday as the case gets forwarded to Naha District Prosecutors’ Office.
