Iwakuni’s South Side Pool receives renovations, upgrades
A $757,000 renovation project at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni’s South Side Pool should be complete in time for the traditional base pool openings on Memorial Day weekend, officials say.
The Marine Corps Headquarters renovation contract was awarded to Ebara Jitsugyo Construction Company, which expects to be finished by May 6, said Navy Lt. Matthew C. Tolhurst, project manager and deputy resident officer in charge of construction for Iwakuni’s Facilities Division.
The pool has not been renovated since it was built more than a decade ago. Much of the work upgrades appearance and amenities, including new surfacing and paint, Tolhurst said.
“In addition,” he said, “we are building indoor showers, lockers and bathrooms that will be on the same level as the pool deck,” Tolhurst said.
A 10-foot slide will be installed along with the diving boards that were already in place. “Everybody loves to slide,” quipped Tolhurst.
But not all of the renovations are cosmetic. The plumbing was in bad shape, said Petty Officer 1st Class Alex Canonizado, engineering liaison with the contractor, and is being replaced, which will improve the pumping and filtration systems.
The pool gets a lot of use from base residents, Tolhurst said, which is why it wasn’t closed for renovations during months it’s usually open.
“It’s essential in terms of quality-of-life that the renovations don’t overlap into the swimming months,” he said. “It’s going to be in much better shape and might even seem like an all-new pool.”
