Iwakuni Marine jailed in auto-parts theft case
An Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station corporal remained in Japanese custody Monday after being arrested Sunday in connection with a theft at an off-base car dealership.
Base officials confirmed 25-year-old Cpl. Todd M. Heaney, of Marine Aircraft Logistics Squadron 12, was arrested “in connection with larceny of car parts from the local area.”
Police officials said Heaney, and another unidentified person, stole more than $4,700 of car parts Sept. 28.
The police would not identify the other person but said he voluntarily agreed to their request to be questioned.
Base spokeswoman Master Gunnery Sgt. Constance S. Dillard said she couldn’t comment on any other suspects “because this is still an active investigation.”
Dillard said base Naval Criminal Investigative Service officials are helping with the investigation at the request of the Iwakuni police.
Police would not discuss how Heaney was pinpointed as a suspect.
However, Japan’s Kyodo News reported police saying they found several of the stolen items at his home.
The items included parts such as automobile passenger seats from used cars on display at the dealership, police said.
A city police official said Heaney admitted to stealing the auto parts.
