MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan — A Marine based here remained in Japanese police custody Monday after his arrest Saturday morning for allegedly climbing onto the balcony of a 20-year-old nursing student’s apartment in the city’s Fuju district.

Lance Cpl. Daniel Stose, 27, is suspected of climbing onto the balcony of the woman’s first-floor residence about 5:25 a.m. Saturday, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Police Department report stated.

Police officers responded to her call, arresting Stose on the spot about 5:41 a.m., a police spokesman said Monday.

“There was no reported attempts by the Marine to enter the inside premises of the local resident,” base officials stated in a news release Monday.

Stose said he was merely taking shelter from the rain, the police spokesman said.

“If he needed shelter from the rain, there was a common area at the apartment building,” the spokesman said, “or he could have easily taken shelter in a nearby railroad station.”

No formal charges had been filed Monday.

“We want to express our regret for causing concern to the local resident who was trespassed upon,” base officials stated. “We take the conduct of our servicemembers in the community very seriously.”

Police said the incident remains under investigation.

“We are cooperating with local authorities in this investigation,” base officials stated. “Should the investigation result in the fault of a U.S. servicemember, they will be held accountable.”
