Iwakuni gets new wireless service
IWAKUNI AIR BASE, Japan — Residents of Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni will have more opportunities to wirelessly connect to the Internet beginning in late February when the base activates a new network of Wi-Fi hot spots, base officials said.
The new service will allow any computer owner to get online for free at locations including the Crossroads Mall, Crossroads Cafe, Single Marine Lounge, Strike Zone, IronWorks Gym, Hornet’s Nest, Club Iwakuni, child development centers and teen centers.
The move would increase access at a base that has struggled to provide Internet and cable television service in recent years. Now, broadband Internet is available in some housing units and paid wireless is available in others, though signal strength can be an issue, according to provider NTT Communications Corp.
