Iwakuni enlisted club opens on Friday
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan — A ceremony at 3 p.m. Friday in the Landing Zone Enlisted Club, on Club Iwakuni’s second floor, will mark the renovated facility’s re-opening.
All station personnel may attend, said an Iwakuni Marine Corps Community Services spokeswoman.
The club’s regular members — servicemembers ranked E-5 and below — may return at 7 p.m. Food is to be served during a 9 p.m. social hour; drawings for door prizes are to begin at 10 p.m. At midnight, the club will hold a drawing for a pool cue.
“We created a sports bar theme with a high-end sound and lighting system,” Don West, MCCS design and project coordinator, stated in a base news report. “Enlisted personnel make up the largest percentage of the base population, and for a long time we’ve felt that they deserve to have a nicer club.”
Renovations included removing walls separating the three billiard rooms from the lounge and relocating the club entry doors outward to create more space. The ceiling was painted black to match the black-light carpet, which has colorful confetti patterns.
Also, a portable square island bar rests in the center of the lounge under the skylight. Above the bar, mounted along the skylight’s perimeter, hang eight 27-inch televisions, visible throughout the club. Also available for viewing are two large projection televisions with new speakers.
