When Iwakuni's Marine Corps Community Services director first arrived at Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station nearly two years ago, one of his goals was to spruce up the air station’s enlisted club.

Capitalizing on the holiday season, director Dale Smith opened the remodeled Landing Zone at 7 p.m. Tuesday, giving an early Christmas present to the enlisted Marines and sailors.

“When I arrived at Iwakuni and toured the enlisted club, I made up my mind that upgrading that facility was a priority,” Smith said Wednesday afternoon.

MCCS spokeswoman Doriann Geller said a survey showed patrons wanted a sports bar. The renovations feature a sports bar theme, from football and basketball to motorcycling and skateboarding.

The club features sports posters and photographs, team jerseys, sports equipment and a suspended kayak. A motorcycle will hang soon, as if protruding from a wall.

Fog-making machines and black lights that highlight glow-in-the-dark carpeting also add to the new atmosphere.

"It's the best E [enlisted] club I've ever seen in the Marine Corps,” Sgt. Kenton Conner opined. “MCCS really goes all out to do things like this for us."

The official Landing Zone grand opening is in early 2004, Geller said.
