Italy unit spearheads humanitarian mission to Tunisia
The U.S. State Department is sending a shipment of humanitarian relief supplies to Tunisia with the help of the 3rd Battalion, 405th Army Field Support Brigade.
The U.S. Agency for International Development maintains a large warehouse at Leghorn Army Depot near Camp Darby with the help of the battalion in order to quickly support humanitarian missions run by the office of foreign disaster assistance.
“OFDA keeps our warehouse stocked with emergencies such as this and we’re well-equipped to get supplies where OFDA needs them as quickly as possible,” battalion commander Lt. Col. Richard Pierce said in a news release. “We are grateful for the opportunity to assist the people of north Africa and to help alleviate their suffering in our own small way.”
The shipment — 4,000 blankets, 40 rolls of plastic sheeting and 9,600 10-liter water containers — was set to be flown from by U.S. military aircraft from an airport in nearby Pisa.
The battalion has supported previous missions to Haiti, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines.
